JOHANNESBURG – A weekend newspaper report on teenage pregnancy is filled with distorted statistics, according to the Department of Education.
Education spokesperson Steve Mabona responded to a report stating over 3,000 Gauteng pupils between 10 and 15 years old were impregnated in 2019, in some cases by their educators.
Mabona said the numbers in the report were misleading, without numbers for all the provinces and there were no indicators of how many of the pregnancies involved educators.
The spokesperson said should a teacher be implicated, it would be sexual misconduct and would lead to the educator being disallowed to work with children if convicted.
He asked that parents work with the department to make allowances for teenagers who have fallen pregnant and need support in order to complete their formal education.
