Hope to Heal Wellness Centre for Victims and Survivors of Human Trafficking

Establishment of the Hope to Heal Wellness Centre

Background and Urgent Need

In late December 2020, Seema Naidoo was approached by the Department of Social Development in Gauteng regarding a critical case involving 32 surviving victims of human trafficking. The department urgently required a facility to accommodate and support these individuals.

Collaboration with Stakeholders

In January 2021, Ms. Seema Naidoo met with representatives from the Department of Social Development and several other involved parties to address the urgent needs of survivors of human trafficking. This gathering was aimed at developing a coordinated response and establishing a clear plan of action to support the victims.

During the meeting, a senior official from the Department of Social Development recognised the immediate necessity for specialised services and committed to providing support for the facility. The official pledged to equip the property adequately and ensure that funding would be expedited to meet the pressing requirements. Ms. Naidoo was entrusted with the responsibility of locating a suitable property and preparing the centre for operation within a two-week period, highlighting the collaborative effort to deliver timely and effective assistance for survivors.

Securing and Equipping the Facility

In response to the urgent need for a haven for survivors, Ms. Naidoo took decisive action and managed to locate and secure a suitable property within just two weeks. Remarkably, she accomplished this feat using her own financial resources, as no initial support was provided by the state. Once the property was secured, Ms. Naidoo ensured that all necessary health and safety standards were strictly adhered to, and the facility successfully passed the required inspections. To ensure that residents would receive thorough and compassionate care, she assembled a dedicated team comprising eight staff members. Thanks to her determined efforts, the Hope to Heal Centre was officially established in February 2021, providing a critical lifeline for victims and survivors of human trafficking.

Facilities and Amenities

The Hope to Heal Wellness Centre was thoughtfully designed to provide a holistic environment where survivors could focus on healing and recovery. The facility included an outdoor gym, offering residents a space to engage in physical activity and support their well-being. A library was available, creating opportunities for personal growth and relaxation through reading. Dedicated areas allowed residents to gather and play board games, fostering social interaction and a sense of community. The centre also featured a swimming pool, which provided both physical exercise and a calming atmosphere. In addition, a vegetable garden was cultivated, empowering survivors to participate in nurturing activities and learn new skills. Spaces for yoga were set aside, supporting mindfulness and mental health, while art activity facilities encouraged creative expression and served as therapeutic outlets for residents.

The counselling rooms at the centre were intentionally designed to create a comfortable and supportive environment. These spaces enabled victims to receive guidance and emotional support throughout their recovery process, ensuring that their needs for privacy and reassurance were met during their healing journey.

Accommodation and Care Structure

The centre was thoughtfully organised to provide tailored support to victims at different stages of their recovery journey. To achieve this, the facility was divided into separate areas specifically designated for entry-level and stage-two housing. This arrangement was essential, as many individuals arrived at the centre in a highly vulnerable state, often experiencing severe addiction and trauma. By creating distinct sections, the centre was able to offer different levels of care and attention, ensuring that each resident received support appropriate to their immediate needs and stage of recovery.

Support for Victims

The centre has provided vital support to victims from a range of countries, as well as to South African nationals. Despite facing significant challenges and not receiving any financial assistance for basic necessities such as food, toiletries, or medical treatment for those in their care, the centre has remained steadfast in its commitment to assisting survivors. The dedication to offering a safe and supportive environment for all victims, regardless of their origin, demonstrates the centre’s unwavering mission to facilitate recovery and healing with limited resources.

Acknowledgements

The success of the Hope to Heal Centre is a testament to the collaborative efforts and unwavering support of many individuals. In particular, Ms. Naidoo’s achievements in establishing and operating the centre would not have been possible without the invaluable assistance of a dedicated individual who has chosen to remain anonymous. This individual played a crucial role by recognising the urgent need for such a facility and offering ongoing support throughout the process. The centre extends its heartfelt gratitude for this significant contribution and continued encouragement, which have been instrumental in enabling the provision of essential services to those in need.
